The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has had a significant impact on many industries, including recruitment. HR and talent teams use AI tools such as ChatGPT to streamline recruitment processes and achieve greater efficiency. However, businesses must ensure that the use of AI is done securely, effectively, and indiscriminately. ChatGPT, for example, can automate tasks that humans used to perform, such as CV writing and script preparation for interviews. However, the tool has several weaknesses, including the lack of unique and exceptional characteristics and its limited depth of understanding. In addition, there are concerns about bias in documents generated by ChatGPT, which reproduces the biases that exist in society. The recruitment industry must ensure that they strive for a better society and not perpetuate existing power structures. The use of AI will not replace recruiters, as there are hard limits on ChatGPT’s usefulness. Recruiters will still check employment histories, verify references and establish the truth of those claims. Candidates using ChatGPT inappropriately when applying for job roles may face consequences, such as detection by tools that check for ChatGPT’s hallmarks, leading to a recruiter’s suspicions about the authenticity of the candidate’s application.

If it does, the impact will be huge. ChatGPT touches anything that involves language: CVs, cover letters, emails – perhaps even scripts for telephone and in-person interviews. But the big question is competence. Can ChatGPTtruly match human efforts?

For now, at least, the answer appears to be “No”. The outputs ChatGPT generates, though often passable, tend to be generic. It lacks the unique spark that distinguishes exceptional candidates. There are also big issues with its depth of understanding. Ask ChatGPT to share genuine expertise on a niche topic and it will often get its facts wrong. Neither of these weaknesses bodes well for a job application.

With that said, a little human help goes a long way. A human editing ChatGPT’s output could produce a better result than either one acting alone. As the technology improves, it’s even possible that the human element could fade away entirely.”
