Number of employed increased by 3% when compared to previous year

The unemployment rate in Malaysia fell to 3.6% in December 2022, down by 0.6% from the same month of the previous year, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia.

In November 2022, the unemployment rate was also at 3.6%.

The number of unemployed persons continued to fall in December 2022 registering a decline of 0.2% to a record 599,600, which was below the 600,000 threshold-person for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic started, and compared to 600,900 recorded in November 2022, the Department reported.

The number of employed persons increased by 3% when compared to the previous year and 0.1% when compared to the previous month, the report notes.

The labour force grew over the previous year from 16.34 million in December 2021 to 16.73 in December 2022. The labour force continued its upward trend with a month-to-month rise of 0.1% in December equivalent to 20,600 persons, while the labour force participation rate was unchanged at 69.8% compared to the previous month.

By economic sector, the number of employed persons in the services sector continued to increase, largely in the wholesale and retail trade, food and beverage services, and information and communication activities. The Department said other sectors, such as agriculture, manufacturing, construction, and mining and quarrying, also maintained their positive trend in the number of employed persons.

Meanwhile, the number of people outside of the labour force in December increased by 0.1% and registered an additional 3,800 to 7.24 million over the month. According to the Department, the major composition of the outside labour force was housework/family responsibilities at 43%, followed by schooling/training at 41%.
